New And Improved! Posted by: Nate in Other

It’s been a long 2 years and 10 months since I started the site and throughout that time the logo has stayed pretty much the same. Today, however, it’s time to retire my old friend and bring in something new. This is now the new Chemical Jump logo designed by my amazingly talented friend AC Bananas. I gave him the general idea for what I wanted and he exceeded my wildest expectations, so big thanks to him!

If enough of you like the logo I’ll definitely do digitally printed shirts in the near future, so let me know what you think!

1000 Posts Later… Posted by: Nate in Other

Yep, it’s been 1000 posts over here on Chemical Jump! Looking back at when I started I could never have dreamed I would make it this far. What started out as a hobby is now something of a really serious hobby! People are occasionally telling me I need to expand and really make Chemical Jump into a business. There’s no doubt I could do that and be throwing parties out in LA with the rest of them. And that’s not to say I won’t throw a party or two in the future, but right now I enjoy the hell out of this blog. It gives me so much pride to share music with people.

I don’t want Chemical Jump to become a company like other blogs. I don’t want to write sponsored posts for buckets of money like other blogs. All I want is to keep sharing music. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.

I love you all. Thanks for reading 1000 posts. Many more to come.

Moombahton: A Slow Starting Relationship Posted by: Nate in Other

I wanted to take the time today to write a few words on a subject I’ve been silent on since it’s emergence last year. I’ve tried to avoid, since I really could care less about it. But the time has come to express my feelings.

My friends over at Stoney Roads wrote up a little post a while ago expressing their distaste for the genre. One of their concerns was how you’d be able to dance to something like Moombahton. I’m not too concerned about that since people manage to dance to just about anything these days. I’m focuing more on their other point. How creativity in the music simply goes out the window when the whole genre is based off slowing a song down to 108bpm.

The fundamental problem I see with Moombahton is that it wasn’t a unique sound that was created over time and slowly evolved like many of the styles in electro house that you see today. Moombahton was created by slowing Afrojack’s remix of the Silvio Ecomo & DJ Chuckie’s Moombah to 108 bpm. For me, the real problem with Moombahton is that you can define it. Moombahton was introduced as a genre in a new age of so many bedroom producers that it overwhelms my inbox every morning with crazy mashups, edits, remixes and everything in between. There are so many people who can simply fire up FL Studio, Reason, Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools, etc and use that established definition of Moombahton to create something that resembles Kuato from Total Recall.

If Moombahton is to survive and stand up as a respectable genre in my eyes, remixes and edits need to become more creative. I’d actually prefer for most of them to stop, but I know that’s not going to happen. Bedroom producers to need step up and start experimenting more and broadening the definition. Getting away from lazy edits and remixes which just add a few simple kick drums.

The good news is this has already somewhat started. Some producers have taken to create their own original Moombahton tracks, which actually sound pretty good. And do you know why they sound good? Because they were made from the beginning to be played at 108bpm. One of the producers leading the original Moombahton front right now is Dillon Francis. His originals thus far have been great and I’ve yet to hear a Moombahton remix from him that didn’t push it to the next level.

Dillon Francis – Que Que Feat. Maluca

Kito & Reija Lee – Broken Hearts (Dillon Francis Remix) by Dillon Francis

A few more producers including Tittsworth and Alvin Risk are also doing great originals.

Alvin Risk & Tittsworth – Pendejas by AlvinRisk

I sort of sound like a broken record saying it over and over again, but I believe it’s important to really hammer the point home. Moombahton needs to expand what it’s known as.

At the end of the day I still don’t think Moombahton should have been classified as a genre. But I also realize it’s not going away anytime soon. I laid out my views, now back to your regularly scheduled electro…

Exit Festival Treasure-Hunt Clue! Posted by: Nate in Other

Just a refresher for those of you who might not have seen my previous post, but Exit Festival is having a blog Treasure-Hunt this year which I’m participating in. Starting a few days ago you could go visit one of the partner blogs on competition.exitfest.org and look for a clue about one of the artists playing at this year’s festival. Once you think you know the artist, just fill out the form and you’ll be entered to win 2 festival tickets, flights from London, and a hotel stay for the festival!

Today’s clue is:

The roots of the band originate in Boston before they moved north to their new musical home

Remember just head over to competition.exitfest.org and fill out the form with who you think the artist is for your chance to win!

Exit Festival Treasure Hunt Posted by: Nate in Other

So it’s finally time to announce what I’ve got going on with Exit Festival! They’ve partnered up with 10 other blogs around the world to do a little blog treasure hunt to win tickets, flights from London and accommodation for 4 nights so you can have the most fun out of your Exit experience. Entering is pretty dead simple, starting on May 30th head over to the Exit competition page and visit one of the blogs for a daily clue about an artist preforming at Exit this year. Once you think you’ve got the artist locked down, just complete the entry form and you’re entered to win! It couldn’t be more easy. Now would also be a good time to start following Exit’s Facebook and Twitter pages as updates about the competition so you won’t miss a beat.

Exit Festival Competition Page

I personally can’t wait to see who else they have planned for this years fest. Last year featured Busy P, Erol Alkan, Crookers, Boys Noize, SebastiAn, DJ Mehdi and A-Trak literally to just name a few, so this year is sure to be equally epic. The 2011 lineup is below and hopefully if my schedule and bank account allow, I might be heading out this year for the festival!

Music Festival Frenzy Posted by: Nate in Other

With Coachella over the summer festival season is finally upon us. I just wanted to mention a quick bit about two today. The first being Neon Desert Music Festival in El Paso, TX next Saturday April 30th. The reason for me mentioning this particular festival is that I’m actually playing it! My set is early at 12-12:30, but you can bet I’ll pack as many dancey bangers as I can in. So anyone living in El Paso should come down and see me along with MSTRKRFT, Designer Drugs and CSS!

Edit: If you act quick you can get half off a ticket to Neon Desert on Groupon!

The other festival I wanted to mention is more for my European readers. EXIT Festival is going off again this year July 7th-10th. The electronic lineup so far has some big electronic names like Tiga, Magnetic Man, Digitalism live, Fedde Le Grand and many more to be announced plus bands like Arcade Fire, M.I.A. and Bad Religion. I’m gonna be teaming up with Exit on something very special in the next few weeks. I can’t reveal any details yet, but it’s going to be very fun.
