Designer Drugs – HARDCORE/SOFTCORE (Review) Posted by Nate in: Electronic

I don’t typically review albums, but I got an email about Designer Drugs‘ new album HARDCORE/SOFTCORE and I was randomly quoted in it talking about their single Through The Prism and since I’ve covered Designer Drugs so much here with their Datamixes I wanted to write a few words about it.

The opening track in an album is probably one of the most important decisions to make because it’s generally the first song someone listens to and quickly forms an impression of the rest from that moment on. The first track on the album happens to be a new one called Dead Meat which overwhelmingly defines their sound to a tee. The one track that felt strangely out of place, however, was Purgatory. It’s only a minute long, so I guess it’s more filler than anything, but it literally feels like something straight out of the Tron Legacy soundtrack and just doesn’t fit with the rest of the album.

Three tracks on the album have already been released (Riot, Drop Down, and Through The Prism) so as far as new material goes, Face Melter is hands down my favorite track on the release. If you’ve been following Designer Drugs for any amount of time you’d know they’ve been playing this track for well over 6 months and driving people crazy not releasing it until now. Speaking of crazy, Crazy For You is also another one of my favorite tracks off the album. It reminds me of their earlier remix work (especially their Mariah Carey remix) that delivered a solid beat with perfectly arranged vocals. I just can’t get enough of a good vocal hook.

Overall the album features 13 tracks, which as the title suggests, range anywhere from hardcore to softcore. Their Datamixes have already done a good job of reacher a broader base of fans all over the world, but I think the album is going to be a huge success for them in bringing even more people into their unique sound.

Through The Prism (Dada Life Remix) Posted by Nate in: Electronic

Designer Drugs just released their remixes EP for Through The Prism today. I honestly had a hard time picking a remix I liked the most. The PLS DNT STP remix is a great dubstep mix, the Tom Deluxx remix is everything you could want from a straight electro track and the Drop The Lime remix is wonderfully simple yet still packs a punch. In a perfect world I’d post them all, but in this imperfect world we live in I decided to go with the banger of a remix Dada Life made. It actually sounds like they may have used some of the same elements from their recent single White Noise Red Meat to make the remix (or vise versa). Either way, you should pick this and all the other remixes up as soon as possible.

Fly By Night (Cyberpunkers Remix) Posted by Nate in: Electronic

The long awaited remix by Cyberpunkers of Fly By Night finally dropped in stores Monday on Designer Drugs’ new label Sex Cult Records. Versions of the track have been appearing in their datamixes since 10. First the original, then the Alvin Risk remix and the Cyberpunkers remix in number 12. It’s a bit harder than all the other remixes which is probably why I like it so much, but I do enjoy the Alvin Risk remix as well.

Designer Drugs – Datamix 12 Posted by Nate in: Electronic

For those of you not at a family dinner of some kind on Christmas, like me, you’ll be happy to know Designer Drugs have given you all a last minute present in the form of Datamix 12. Aside from the great track selection, as I was skimming through the mix I noticed it feels like there may be a lot more tracks in this one than previous mixes, but that could just be all the eggnog messing with my head.
